SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAM
SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAM
The School Health programme was designed to ensure that the school pupils are as healthy as possible and to obtain the maximum benefit from his/her education with the learning environment safe and conducive for learning. The school Health services are grouped under preventive and curative services provided for the pupils and staff within the school setting. The Programme comprises of various components which include
*School health services
*Health Education and Promotion
*Nutrition services
*Healthy school environment
*Physical Education
*Counseling& Psychological Services
The then State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu inaugurated a technical committee in 1999 to work out modalities for the programme and it was launched in 2001. The programme was later revitalized in 2006.
The Oral Health Component was integrated into the programme with an accompanying Mobile Dental Van in May 2008.
The activities carried out during the school health screening are:
1. Medical and nutritional screening of the school pupils.
2. Provision of essential drugs and treatment of minor ailment and referral if need.
3. Inspection of school environment and facilities using a checklist.
4. Inspection of the food vendors and stalls.
5. Inspection of the First Aid Box contents.
6. Health Education and promotion.
7. Distribution of I.E.C. materials
8. Dental Screening and treatment.

5 • The Commonest conditions seen among the school children include Malnutrition, Acute Respiratory Infections, Scabies /Ringworm. Generally it is observed that there is poor personal hygiene seen in all the schools. Hence it is ensured that health education and promotion- health talks are given on environmental sanitation, personal hygiene, oral hygiene, care of the eye and on adequate nutrition
• The commonest dental conditions seen are Dental Caries and Chronic Marginal Gingivitis which is treated by the procedures outlined above (S&P and Extraction).
• The commonest ENT Cases seen are Ear Wax and perforations which are treated with aural toileting and syringing with adequate referral when needed.
