ALIMOSHO GENERAL HOSPITAL EMBARKS ON BLOOD DONATION DRIVE IN LASU
Alimosho General Hospital, Igando, has embarked on four-day blood donation drive at the Lagos State University, LASU, as part of efforts to ensure the continuous availability of blood in the hospital blood banks with a view to saving lives.
Speaking at the commencement of the initiative in LASU, Ojo, the Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr. Madewa Adebajo disclosed that the blood drive is with the intent of fostering consistent blood donation habit in the general public, especially with the youths.
He said the advent of a new phase of maternal birth management for minimal to zero mortality compelled the need for habitual blood donation amongst spouses patronising public hospitals in Lagos State.
Dr. Adebajo averred that the qualitative delivery which Alimosho GH is noted for underscores the necessity to make blood supplies possible to patients whence required, saying that “This initiative, hopefully, would curb prevalent maternal deaths as we had in the past, from most unbooked cases brought into the facility”.
While advocating the health benefits of blood donation, Adebajo asserted that blood donation reduces polycythemia – a condition of excess blood supply – which might be detrimental to health, intimating that red blood cells are also being replenished through the process.
He opined “If people could be well informed on the importance of a healthy lifestyle, there might be minimal haemorrhagic conditions warranting transfusion”.
Other contributors at the event emphasised the importance of participating in the scheme and stated that blood is a useful component in the treatment of sickle cell and cancer inflicted patients as well as neonates.
