Dr. Omodele Joyce Osunkiyesi attended the University of Ibadan from where she obtained the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree in 1981. While there, she graduated with honours distinction in Physiology and Pharmacology, won the departmental prize in Physiology and the faculty of Clinical Science and Dentistry prize for overall proficiency. She also obtained a Master of Public Health degree in 2005 from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Batimore USA. In addition, Dr. Osunkiyesi bagged a certificate in Strategic Leadership in Population and Reproductive Health in 2005 from The Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health. She is also a fellow of the Medical College of General Practice (FMCGP) having been inducted into the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in 1989.
Her public health experience as led her to Head the directorates of Primary Health Care at the Lagos State Local Government Service; Health Care Planning, Research and Statistics at the Ministry of Health. Her health care experience includes being a Resident, General Medical Practice with the Federal Government of Nigeria between 1985 and 1989. She was also a Consultant, Family Practice with the Federal Government between 1989 and 1995. Until her appointment as the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health; She held sway as the Director, Family Health and Nutrition also at the Ministry.
Dr. Osunkiyesi is a member of the American Public Health Association, Global Health Council, Nigeria Medical Association and the National Postgraduate Medical Association of Nigeria.
